Alan Cadogan’s work explores the idea that masculine intimacy is a form of combat. Inspired by Olympic Freestyle Wresting, in which the artist has trained and competed, much of Alan’s work begins as life drawing at the training sessions of the Sydney Silverbacks – Harbour City Wrestling Club. The constant motion of the wrestlers fuels the fluidity of his compositions while the restricted colour palette of red and blue references the mandated colours of competition wrestling as well as of hot and cold, passion and sadness, intimacy and remoteness.
